STEP ONE: AWARENESS
How do you embrace self-love?
If you google “how do I love myself” you will read many examples such as, walking through nature, enjoying a bubble bath or getting a massage. These ideas are a great way to treat yourself, but how do you really begin to love yourself and break free from the negativity that often surrounds us?
I can tell you from personal experience that it is not an easy journey. It should be easy though, right? I mean how hard could it really be to love ourselves?
If I was to ask you right now to write down 10 things you love yourself, what would they be? (now don’t skip past this and keep reading, actually try and write things down)
Did you find the exercise challenging or easy? Did you complete your list of 10 or did you only get a few things down? How long did you take you to complete your list?
Now write down 10 things you dislike about yourself. Was it easier or harder?
For many people, It is much easier to write down the things you dislike about yourself than it is to write down the things you love about yourself. The question is, how can you overcome this?
THE FIRST KEY TO BECOMING MORE SELF-LOVING IS AWARENESS:
Being aware of your thoughts
Being aware of your emotions
Being aware of the language you use
Being aware of the roles you play
Being aware of the patterns that play out in your life
Being aware of your inner voice and critic
Being aware of core beliefs and how they impact your life
“Awareness gives you power. If you are aware of your thoughts, you can change them. It is only when something is unconscious that you can lose your sense of self.”
BY BEING AWARE YOU CAN BEGIN TO:
Identify where your negative thoughts, patterns, and behaviours came from
Identify if the roles you play in life are supportive or sabotaging
Identify the language you use towards yourself and if this weakens or strengthens your sense of self
Identify if your inner critic is your own voice or the voice of others
Identify your core beliefs and how you can change them to something more supportive
Identify and change your negative thoughts into more affirming statements
You can see that by having awareness, you have a choice. You can change and recreate new thoughts, behaviours, roles, and patterns that are more conducive to a supportive environment. Now I’m not saying this will be some magic cure and you will never hear a negative voice again. Life is about balance, and I think we may always have the two opposing sides. However, your relationship to your inner critic will start to change. You can consciously choose to listen to that voice and either turn that volume up or turn the volume down. The choice will be yours.
This coming week, start to become more mindful and aware of your thoughts. Stop, pause and reflect upon what your inner voice is saying. Is it self-affirming or self-damaging? Whatever your thoughts, remind yourself that you have the power, you have the choice to create a new thought within that moment. You can also choose to turn up the volume of your affirming voice and turn down the volume of your negative voice. It takes daily practice to become more aware of your thoughts and to put these things into action but trust me, it is a worthwhile practice. The more aware you become, the more you will be able to control the volume. You will be able to re-create new thoughts and the more you are able to do this, the more Self-Love you will bring into your life.
